The Douglas County Assessor will proceed with statutorily required reviews of real estate parcels during the COVID-19 pandemic, but safety precautions will be in place. State law requires the assessor’s office to assign a market value on all properties each year and physically review at least 20 percent of properties each year. State law also mandates the assessor’s office assess all real property that may have become subject to taxation since the last previous assessment (parcels with new construction).

In 2020, members of the assessor’s staff will view properties in portions of the city of Alexandria, the city of Osakis, Lake Mary Township, Sections 1-18 of Osakis Township, Sections 1-34 in Miltona Township, Sections 1-21 in Carlos Township and Sections 14-23 in LaGrand Township. These visits will begin June 1.

“A letter will be sent to each property owner making them aware of the upcoming visit,” said Douglas County Assessor Keith Albertsen. “An appraiser from the assessor’s office will knock on the door and step back to wait for the property owner to answer. They will introduce themselves and explain the reason for the visit.”

To respect social distancing requirements, no interior viewing will be conducted this year. The appraisers will review the exterior, ask property owners about the condition of improvements to the property, and may take photographs. Staff will wear a cloth mask if they are less than 6 feet from another person. They will wear a clearly visible ID and a vest identifying them as county employees. A door hanger will be left if no one is home letting the property owner know the appraiser was there.

Property owners who would like to schedule a designated time for the appraiser visit can call 320-762-3884 or email:
