Douglas County residents will encounter temporary limited services as the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services division (DPS-DVS) prepares to launch the new MNDRIVE computer system on Nov. 16.

Specifically, the Douglas County License Bureau will be closed to the public November 12 and 13 to allow for the transition to take place. The license bureau will also be closed November 11 for Veteran’s Day.

The new MNDRIVE system will primarily change the way Minnesota deputy registrar offices, like Douglas County, and car dealerships process vehicle services. Some of the changes Minnesotans will see when accessing these services include:

  • The system replaces the paper 21-day temporary permit with a new temporary license plate. This temporary license plate is printed on a special paper at the dealership and attached to the vehicle.
  • The system will accurately calculate registration taxes and fees to ensure Minnesotans are paying the correct amount.

“We are encouraged by the capabilities of this new statewide system,” says Douglas County License Bureau Director Susan Crotteau. “Anyone buying, selling or trading a vehicle should have a much- improved experience.”

The Douglas County License Bureau will continue to process renewals in person and by use of the drop box located on the west side of the services center at 715 Elm Street in Alexandria. These services are on a first come, first served basis.

Driver’s licenses will continue to be by appointment only. Those appointments should be made through this link.

“Now is also a great time to get your REAL ID,” says Crotteau. “The deadline has been extended until October 1, 2021 but we currently have many open appointments so now’s the time to get it done.”
