Case Number: 20004642

Date Reported: 5/6/2020

Incident: Water Related Search/Recovery

Location: Lake Ida

Complainant/Victim: David Odell Sundgaard, Age 64 of Carlos, MN

Case Details:

On 5/6/2020 at approximately 18:46 hours, the Douglas County Sheriffs Office received a 911 call reporting a male subject went overboard off his boat on Lake Ida, east of Pilgrim Point. Douglas County Deputies, Douglas County Water Patrol, and MN DNR responded to that location. The male subject overboard was being assisted by another passing boater and was pulled from the water when Deputies arrived just minutes later. It was reported the male subject was possibly in the water for an estimated 15 minutes. The 63 year old subject was brought to the public access where North Memorial Ambulance conducted an assessment and transported him to ER for possible hypothermia.
Initial investigation has determined the boat's 200hp tiller motor handle broke apart while the boat was at speed causing the boat to turn suddenly and throw the operator into the water. The operator was not wearing a life vest but was able to hang onto the boat until help arrived. The water temperature at the time of the incident was 54 degrees. The boat was towed to the access by Water Patrol.
The Douglas County Sheriffs Office would like to remind all boaters to wear a life jacket.
A special thank you to the boaters on the water who assisted in this rescue.

Officer: Deputy Dustin Alexander, #211
